This evening David Martinez read from his new Dakota Philosopher: Charles Eastman and American Indian Thought at Birchbark Books in Minneapolis. Martinez was warmly introduced by Louise Erdrich, famed author and Birchbark's proprietor. Martinez seeks to advocate on behalf of his subject, who he says has been unfairly dismissed as excessively assimilationist. Prof. Martinez introduced a family of Eastman's descendants during the Q&A, who expressed great appreciation to the author. I learned of the event via the Minnesota Historical Society Press Book Club, a new Meetup group which is off to a great start.
