42B Nod Goes to Loon; Paulsen Remains Mum

Before Our Love Went Bad: Angie Erhard and Ron Carey

This evening I attended the GOP Minnesota house district 42B endorsing convention. Erik Paulsen, who has long held the seat, is now running for US Congress in CD3. So 42B is an open seat. The event featured a contested endorsement battle between Kathy Veurink and Jenifer Loon. Veurink had better sign coverage and many non-delegate volunteers who were milling about near me, off the convention floor. Veurink's base was clearly Grace Church, the reactionary megachurch just west of Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie. Loon had the preponderant support on the convention floor.

Both candidates excoriated the transportation bill, gay marriage and abortion, though Veurink came across as the more impassioned social conservative. Loon appeared more the insider, mentioning she favored allowing abortion in cases of rape and incest. Erik Paulsen gave his standard uncharismatic, nasal speech; it is stunning to me that Paulsen can not ignite even minimal thunder among his very own base. Indeed, he appears unwilling even to attempt charisma.

Passions on the floor were not heated and the 42B GOP nod went to the more establishment candidate--Jenifer Loon--on the first ballot.

My primary focus for some months has been the race for US Congress in CD3; I attended this evening's convention primarily because I wanted to talk with Erik Paulsen. I closely followed the only contested endorsement contest in CD3 this cycle--Madia-Bonoff-Hovland. During that contest, I attended numerous public and private candidate events. (I'm an active DFLer but I've voted for candidates of various parties.) So I want to learn about Erik Paulsen's views on what's best for the district and the country.

Erik Paulsen will not respond to any of my inquiries. Initially, I emailed him a few policy-based inquiries, but Paulsen stonewalled. So I tried to think up the most innocuous conceivable question, with the intent to simply establish a line of communication with Team Paulsen. So I started emailing Paulsen and staff daily, asking who my state representative is.

In addition to being an innocuous question, to me, the question triggers an ethical requirement. Were I a state representative and a constituent wrote me providing her address and asking 'Who is my state representative?' it is my view that I would be ethically required to provide her with a reply. When I confronted Paulsen on the convention floor, he told me he wouldn't answer my inquiries because they are insincere.

But remember, when I started emailing Paulsen, I began by asking him indisputably substantive questions. It was only later that I decided to take it down to the simplest conceivable level--asking him a question he'd be ethically required to answer. So if he finds my question about who my state rep is insincere, he ought to recall that a) My current daily email to him puts several questions to him--not simply Who is my state rep?; and b) If he will only respond to substantive inquiries, he already has several in his in-box from me.

So as 42B's self-appointed God-of-Sincerity, Paulsen himself is behaving in a transparently insincere manner. And I can't even find a Republican who agrees with Paulsen on this point. This evening I asked several Republicans if in their view a state representative ought to reply, when asked by a constituent 'Who is my state rep?' Universally, they said yes--including a prominent Paulsen for Congress volunteer.

So even in person, man-to-man, Paulsen refused to answer my question. I was and remain flabbergasted. I was standing in an authorized spot off the convention floor when I recorded the following clip:

WOW Gavin--didn't know you were such a radical that had to be thrown out of events!Where did the EP Sargent at Arms get their spiffy vests?! It is so interesting to me the the republicans need to look so official at their conventions. Do they often have security problems that they need such tough looking guys to protect them?

How large was the turnout?

Unreal.

I had a video camera trained on the speaker's podium, and missed witnessing Gavin getting tossed.

I can tell you that the GOPers were not happy I was filming, but as I was on the balcony, in a public area, there was nothing they could do.

So Erik Paulsen think's he's gonna out-hustle his opponent, and win?

If Paulsen wins, we've all been hustled.

If you click on the top photo--the one of Angie and Ron--you can view my slide show of the event. This picture shows Rep. Paulsen working the floor. So [in answer to MunchkinMom, above] perhaps 100 seated delegates and another 50 bystanders. Here are the pictures I took yesterday.

Cool! I applaud you Gavin. It sure is interesting to see that the Republicans don't like anyone to see how their politics are made. What are they hiding anyway? Are they afraid of another "Macocka" comment by one of their glorious leaders?

I also heard that Erik Paulsen thanked the group for the priviledge of the last 12 years he spent serving his party.

I guess I thought elected officials served the people who lived in their districts.

Maybe that is why you don't get any response to your questions. You are not the republican party, you're just a constituent!

That was unbelievable! Is it legal for them to physically remove you from the premises? What are they so afraid of?

To Gavin and followers, your pretty dense arent you. Why would any republican acknowledge you? All your going to do is spin anything he says against him and the party. Suggestion to you all...quit drinking the DFL coolaid. Raising taxes and promising you the same riches that someone who has actually worked for them isn't going to happen. I know it really sucks and its really, really hard but get a job, work hard, SAVE your money (so we dont have to bail anymore irresponsible people out, push for lower taxes, drill for more oil, build more refineries, nuclear plants, and coal plants. Vote GOP, keep this country FREE, keep the government small and we will all be as successful as we want to be...if you like socailism...do us all a favor..move to anywhere in Europe (let us know how their healthcare is)

Nice comment Michael, "flammer" is the most intelligent statement you have considering all the incredibly important topics the previous writer covered. Nothing but emotional responses with no substance. Typical DFLer. I think it is time that we actually address issues with REAL solutions rather than waste energy on emotional responses.
By the way, I noticed that all the previous posts included real names: Munchkinmom, Avidor, Rainman, and Twoputt. Again, issues remain and your concern is a name. I will place a roll of TP in front of my house for you if that is your goal.

I'll admit that I find many of your posts amusing and even educational, but I don't understand the point of this one. In this situation, your not adding value to the dialogue at all.

Paulsen is a dedicated and smart public servant, and Madia is a bright and ambitious new entrant. There is plenty to cover without making it into a two-bit expose.

I enjoy most of your work and hope you get back to what you are capable of.

If you had any sincere in covering the race and comparing the candidates on issues, Paulsen has a very long public record. You could do all kinds of factual research on his positions. Madia is an unknown. Why don't you harass Madio more about his views. I'm sure, given, your track record, you have the red phone hotline to his campaign, ha ha.

You see campaigns DFL or GOP don't want wackos like you hanging around.

Gavin you need a hobby AND you really should finish your education!!! I wouldn't be supprised if you could use a full time job also.

You come across as a frustrated, angry little twerp, kind of like the road rage guys.

I may not always agree with Eric Paulsen or any other politican but that's not a valid excuse to waste time, misbehave and rant like you.

We each have alot of choices, including how best to use our rights. The right of free speech is truly a wonderful thing and one of our most precious assets. Fortunately, almost none of our citizens use their right to free speech as you do.
